Bi Luo Chun, originally known as Xia Sha Ren Xiang or “scary fragrance,” got its name from a story about a woman ran out of space in her basket while harvesting tea.
The story states she then resorted to placing the tea leaves in her shirt, which made them exceptionally fragrant due to the warmth from her body. Local residents of the region called this tea ‘scary fragrance’, due to its strong aroma.
Later, when Emperor Kangxi sampled the tea, he deemed it worthy of a more fitting name and renamed it “Bi Luo Chun”, or “Green Snail Spring”.
