Darjeeling Tea Output Sunk to Record New Low in 2021

Darjeeling tea, a black from the Darjeeling district of India, is one of the most popular teas sold on the market today.

Unfortunately, due a variety of reasons, including climate change, political issues regarding the closure of tea gardens, the loss of export markets, and a general lack of advertising for Darjeeling tea in the domestic market, Darjeeling tea is now being produced at a record new low of 6.5 million kilograms. That is half of the amount produced just 2 decades ago.

Production of Darjeeling tea, one of the most popular tea varieties globally, has shrunk to 6.5 million kg in 2021, the lowest on record and just half of the 13 million kg produced two decades ago.

Plantation owners are afraid that if the Indian government doesn’t figure out a way to revive the Darjeeling tea market, then it might not test the stand of time.
