Yunnan Sourcing 2020 Imperial Grade Jasmine Pearls Green Tea Review

Today I am reviewing a 2020 imperial grade jasmine pearl green tea from Yunnan Sourcing.

Being as how this is a green tea, I much would have preferred to have had it be from the current year, but unfortunately, it seems that they haven’t produced this year’s stock yet because jasmine flowers are typically harvested right around this time of year, so, I had to get last year’s stock.

Regardless, upon opening the bag, I am greeted with a lovely jasmine-honey fragrance.

Review

For this review, I brewed 4 grams of this tea in a gaiwan using distilled water.

I soaked the tea for 10 seconds in hot water and discarded the wash.

First Steep

Brewed for about 40 seconds, which is maybe a little longer then I would normally brew a green tea in a gaiwan, but it is a rolled tea, so, it gives it a little time for the leaves to unfurl.

A very smooth taste.

As is common with this type of tea, the jasmine scent and flavor overpowers the tea a little bit, but hey, if you’re like me and you like jasmine, then you would probably like this tea.

Not as much green tea flavor as I was expecting, but that could be because this green tea is a year old already and as I’m sure most of you know, green tea does not age well.

This steep was light in mouth-feel.

Second Steep

Brewed for about 50 seconds.

The leaves have mostly unfurled from their pearl shape, so I went ahead and took a look at the leaf quality and it’s quite good. They are all whole, unbroken leaves and tea buds. They appear to be in nearly perfect shape, as there aren’t any bug bites or chipped leaves that are common in many teas.

There is a light grape note to this steep, but overall the jasmine is obviously the star of the show.

A slight bit of astringency has shown up, but not to much.

Some people may enjoy honey in their tea, but I don’t see a need with this one, as the jasmine provides an adequate amount of sweetness.

The mouth-feel has also improved and become thicker on this steep.

Third Steep

Brewed for about a minute.

Surprisingly, the tea flavor has come out a little more.

The jasmine flavor on the third steep has become more balanced and you can now taste the minerality of the tea. However, I don’t think there’s much more to say, because this type of tea isn’t the most complex tasting, as it’s mostly a jasmine note.

Conclusion

In my opinion, these are decent jasmine green tea pearls. The leaf quality is very good, but I must say, I have had fresher, better tasting jasmine green tea pearls in the past.

Since this is a scented green tea, it would probably taste better if it weren’t a year old already, but this is what was available at the time. Regardless, if you like this type of tea, these are definitely enjoyable.
