Pu’er tea is a variety of fermented tea produced in the Yunnan province of China.

It’s known for its earthy and complex flavor profile, which can change dramatically as the tea ages.

There are two main types of pu’er tea: raw (Sheng) and ripe (Shu), each of which have unique characteristics.

Taking that into account, let’s take a look at some of the best pu’er tea brands of the year.

    Table of Contents

    • Yunnan Sourcing
    • White2Tea
    • Crimson Lotus Tea
    • King Tea Mall
    • Bitterleaf Teas
    • Farmer Leaf

    • Verdant Tea

    Yunnan Sourcing

Yunnan Sourcing is a well-known supplier of Chinese teas, including a wide variety of pu’er teas.

Founded by Scott Wilson in 2004, Yunnan Sourcing has become a popular choice for tea enthusiasts around the world.

Yunnan province is often considered to be the historical birthplace of tea, and Yunnan Sourcing takes advantage of this rich heritage by offering a diverse selection of teas, including raw and ripe pu’er, black teas, oolong teas, and much more.

I am personally a big of of Yunnan Sourcing, but they do sell quite a lot of different products, so there is certainly some variation in quality from product to product.

    White2Tea

White2Tea is another prominent vendor specializing in Chinese teas, particularly pu’er tea.

Founded by Paul Murray, the company has become well-regarded among tea enthusiasts for its carefully curated selection of pu’er teas, both raw and ripe, as well as other Chinese tea varieties like oolongs and black teas.

I generally am not a huge fan of their teas, but many people do recommend them, so I figured I would put them on the list.

    Crimson Lotus Tea

Crimson Lotus Tea is another specialty tea company that focuses primarily on pu’er teas, including their own blends of young pu’er tea.

Founded in 2013 by Glen and Dawa Lamu, this Seattle-based company has become known for its dedication to sourcing high-quality pu’er tea from Yunnan, China.

Many tea enthusiasts appreciate the attention to detail in Crimson Lotus’s packaging and presentation, as their tea cakes often come with visually appealing designs and wrappers.

They are probably most well-known for their YouTube channel, where the owner brings on guests from the online tea community to discuss the world of tea.

    King Tea Mall

King Tea Mall is another vendor specializing in Chinese teas, including pu’er tea.

They provide a wide selection of both raw and ripe pu’er teas from various regions and producers within Yunnan.

In addition to tea, King Tea Mall also sells a variety of teaware, including teapots, cups, and other accessories necessary for traditional Chinese tea brewing.

    Bitterleaf Teas

Based in Kunming, Yunnan, China, Bitterleaf Teas is another popular tea company that specializes primarily in pu’er tea, although they also offer a variety of other Chinese teas such as oolong, black, and white teas.

Bitterleaf provides detailed information about their teas, including the origin, processing, flavor profiles, and more. They also share insights about their sourcing trips, giving customers a closer look at the journey from leaf to cup.

    Farmer Leaf

Farmer Leaf is a tea company that specializes in pu’er tea and other Chinese teas, with a particular focus on teas from the Yunnan province.

William Osmont, who is the owner of Farmer Leaf, also runs a YouTube channel where you can learn about tea.

While their teas are popular, I have had issues with their customer service, as it is a bit slow, and they don’t seem to be incredibly responsive.

    Teas We Like

Teas We Like is a pu’er tea company based in Taiwan.

Many people appreciate their knowledge and good storage of their teas.

    Verdant Tea

Verdant Tea is one of the more well-known Western loose-leaf tea vendors, and they do sell their own brand of pu’er tea.

It’s worth mentioning that while many of Verdant Tea’s products are of decent quality, they have come under scrutiny in the past allegedly mislabeling their pu’er tea as older than theoretically possible, but since then, they seem to be more careful with their labeling.

I personally do enjoy their teas, and their customer service is top-notch.
