Baozhong tea, also known as Pouchong tea, is a type of lightly oxidized oolong tea which originated in the Fujian Province of China but is now primarily produced in Taiwan.

The oxidation level of Baozhong tea is typically between 8% to 12%, which is lower than many other oolong teas, placing it somewhere between green tea and a more typical oolong in terms of oxidation and flavor.

Baozhong tea is known for its light, floral aroma and a somewhat mellow taste. The leaves of this tea are usually long and twisted, rather than rolled into balls or other shapes, as is common with many other styles of oolong teas.

Taking that into account, let’s take a look at some of the best Baozhong tea brands of the year.

Floating Leaves Tea, Farmer’s Choice Baozhong 2023 Spring

This Baozhong variety is produced by a farmer named Mr. Chen in Pinglin, with whom Floating Leaves Tea has been working since 2005. Mr. Chen is known for his experimental approach to tea farming and supposedly processes every step in-house.

Smooth, fruity, and full of flavor, we feel that this is a Baozhong tea worth trying.

Taiwan Tea Crafts, Mr. Ong’s 2023 Winter Competition Wenshan Bao Zhong Tea, Finalist Grade

Mr. Ong’s 2023 Winter Competition Wenshan Bao Zhong Tea, listed as the Finalist Grade, is a quality Baozhong tea from Taiwan Tea Crafts. This tea, produced by a well-respected tea maker, Mr. Ong, showcases characteristics which are common in quality Baozhong teas.

This tea has a bouquet of floral aromas, and a scent somewhat reminiscent of buttered green bean.

The Tao of Tea, Baozhong Oolong Tea

We have previously reviewed this tea and found it to have flavor notes of wildflowers, pistachio nut, vegetation, cream and honey, but it has a light flavor which is typical for Baozhong teas.
